Een 6-delige documentaireserie over de fotografie, haar ontstaan en evolutie, en haar verschillende toepassingsvormen. Afl.2 : Documents for artists. Na WO I was fotografie één van de belangrijkste media. Artiesten onderzochten de mogelijkheden van deze nieuwe kunstsoort, regeringen zagen het als propagandamiddel. Times Online has a story published about Josef Koudelka. This Magnum photographer became famous with his pictures of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia.
Josef Koudelka crouched on the roof of a building in Wenceslas Square, Prague, his camera lens trained on the street below. Thousands of Soviet troops rumbled past in tanks – the city was being invaded. Below him, houses and buses were ablaze, bullets were flying and the wounded cried out. Protesters chanted the name of their hero, the Czech president Alexander Dubcek. Some threw stones at the troops. Others pleaded with the soldiers, begging them to go home. One man simply stood before a tank, silently opened his jacket and defied the soldiers to shoot him in the chest.
Koudelka’s passion for photography is compulsive. Even in the midst of the 1968 invasion he was consumed not by fear but by a desire to capture the event on film. “I don’t consider myself a man with a lot of courage. I am a visual person and I just reacted to what I saw – everywhere I looked there was something important to photograph.”

Larry Towell is a photojournalist who tells a story from a very humanistic point of view adding his own unique perspective.
From 1993 to 2006 he photographed in Israel and Palestine, producing an immense body of work.
In 2001 he was given a small video camera and began to maintain a video diary while working in Israel and Palestine.
This resulted in a 40 minute documentary “Indecisive Moments“, that won the “Achievement in Filmmaking for a Documentary” award at the 2007 New York International Independent Film and Video Festival.

Vanavond op TV een film over een persfotograaf in Rio de Janeiro.
Cinema 2: Cidade de Deus.
Braziliaans-Frans (BR/F) misdaadthriller uit 2002 van Fernando Meirelles en Kátia Lund. Met: Alexandre Rodrigues, Leandro Firmino, Phellipe Haagensen e.a. Cidade de Deus is de naam van een beruchte sloppenwijk in Rio de Janeiro, waar de mensen een uitzichtloos bestaan leiden. Om zich staande te houden sluiten veel jongeren zich aan bij gewelddadige bendes. Buscapé probeert aan dit leven te ontsnappen door als persfotograaf te werken. Zijn eerste opdracht brengt hem echter juist weer terug in de wijk. Met zijn camera brengt hij de opkomst van de meedogenloze Zé in beeld, die als kleine jongen al dood en verderf zaaide en uitgroeide tot de meest gevreesde en sadistische crimineel van de sloppenwijk. Tegelijk wordt ook de levensloop van Buscapé in beeld gebracht. In beide gevallen wordt op schokkende en compromisloze wijze een beeld geschetst van leven en overleven in een Braziliaanse sloppen.

The DNG alternative RAW file format from Adobe has been submitted to the ISO standards. This means that in the future the DNG format will become the standard for RAW file formats, like TIFF, JPG etc. I believe that this is a good development if you consider al the different RAW formats that are already out there and are still being developed in the future. Especially Canon and Nikon think that for every camera they develop they should also develop a new RAW format which demands from every software developer to update their software. It would be a lot easier if they would embrace this DNG format. Also to make sure that in the future every image is “Compatible” with the software you are using at that time. Imagine trying to open RAW images you made 20 or 50 years ago and not being able to do so because these specific RAW files are outdated and not supported any more! If DNG becomes ISO standard this could never happen.

Documentaire. Israël viert in mei zestig jaar onafhankelijkheid, terwijl Palestijnen de vlucht en verdrijving van honderduizenden Palestijnen herdenken. Het einde van het conflict is nog niet in zicht. In deze documentaire onderneemt de Franse fotograaf en straatkunstenaar JR samen met zijn vriend Marco de grootste illegale fototentoonstelling ooit. De omstreden ‘veiligheidsmuur’ in Israël wordt door JR voorzien van enorme posters met lachwekkende portretten. De vervormde gekke bekken, alle van Israëli en Palestijnen met hetzelfde beroep, duiken ook op in acht Palestijnse en Israëlische steden, pontifikaal in de openbare ruimte. De posters hangen zij aan zij, Face2Face, met als doel de menselijkheid terug te brengen en de gelijkenis van de geportretteerden te tonen. JR probeert zo op een luchtige manier de complexiteit en absurditeit van de situatie in het Midden-Oosten ter discussie te stellen.
De documentaire Faces vertelt het inspirerende verhaal achter het Face 2 Face project. Ook de vaak verrassende en emotionele reacties van de Israëlische en Palestijnse voorbijgangers komen in beeld en worden een onderdeel van JR’s kunstproject. De geportretteerden trekken graag een raar gezicht voor de lens. Zij zien in dat ondanks de ellende, vrolijkheid de basis vormt voor vrede en juichen daarom het lachen toe: “No matter what will happen, the smile will not be stolen from our face.” (Sheik Abdul Aziz)
